Rykodisc promote 'Bothy Culture'

'Yer Man From Athlone' from Bothy Culture, is being included in a promotional download campaign in America to celebrate Ryko's 25th birthday. As part of the February promotion for the Rykodisc Music website that will feature their Celtic recordings and their Tradition label, they will specifically be promoting Martyn's album 'Bothy Culture' which was released in 1998 by Rykodisc and the track 'Yer Man From Athlone' will be available as a free audio digital download for one month from 25th February.

Each month features several songs that highlight a different musical genre. Each song chosen is from a Ryko distributed album and with the song download there will be links for consumers to be able to easily purchase the full album. The hope is to encourage consumers to buy the albums and to expose them to the diverse music of Rykodisc's artists. Once the download promotion is over for that month, consumers will still be able to view the previous months song titles and access links to purchase those albums.

Good to see that Rykodisc are still interested in promoting Martyn's music after all this time!

Thanks for the Newsletter - roll on Aug 23rd & the Mull Grand Traverse... the day after my birthday, so the celebrations will have to wait until after I've completed it. Looking forward to the MGT website & entry etc details. A great way to keep Martyn's name & music alive and to encourage young people to tap into their roots - wherever they're from, not just Scots or Celtic.

2007 Proyecto Puentes - Argentina

In November 2007, MBT Trustees BJ Stewart and Chris MacLullich traveled to Argentina to visit a music project for 25 children that the Martyn Bennett Trust has been funding. The Project culminated in November with two concerts by the Children’s Choir and a performance of Martyn’s 'MacKay's Memoirs' in the University of Buenos Aires and the immense Cathedral of La Plata. The project has involved an intensive schedule of rehearsals [combined with a lot of games!] over 8 months. Members of the Buenos Aires Conservatory Orchestra have been providing weekly tuition to the children who are participants in the programme provided by the Fundacion Emmanuel.
The aim of this MBT project was to enhance the musical experience and social inclusion of the young people living in the area through tuition and encouragement in developing their talents.

First saw Martyn when he was performing at the Edinburgh Film Festival opening party. The gala movie had been Ken Loach's Land And Freedom which would make it 1995. It was held in the Corn Exchange [pre conversion] and the theme was understandably Spanish given the film was set during their Civil War, so there was much rustic tapas and the like. Then he appeared and transformed the horrible concrete space into something magical, playing both pipes and fiddle as I recall. It was clear to anybody listening, and not necessarily everybody was as these events go, that we were in the presence of an enormous and precocious talent.

I was fortunate to have met him several times after that, and found him one of the most impressive human beings, a huge hearted man in a wee lad's body. The last time I saw him playing in such an intimate setting was at the Gathering Hall in Portree. I drove to the gig from Edinburgh in a knackered turquoise Citroen AX called 'Agatha' and it was worth every perilous mile. I also remember being at a Howard Marks Q&A at the Assembly Rooms with Martyn [being a weed enthusiast as he was] and he giggled with delight at some of the more, shall we say, out there, questions from the floor. And then even more at the Welshman's droll responses.
